Two Students Missing After Drowning in the Mahaananda River While on Holiday, Mother Rushes from Malda

**Siliguri:** Three friends had gone out for a few hours on holiday from the hostel. They had family permission. They had previously gone out with friends and returned safely to the hostel. But that outing on Sunday ultimately turned into a horrific disaster. While bathing at the Fulbari Mahaananda barrage, two students went missing in the strong current. Their third friend managed to survive.

The incident has caused widespread panic in the Fulbari area. Police and civil defense teams have started searching for the two missing students. Upon hearing the news of her son's disappearance, a mother rushed overnight from Malda to Siliguri.

It is known that all three friends are students of a private English medium school in the Fulbari area. They studied while staying in the hostel. On Sunday, with family permission, the three friends had gone out. They then reached the Fulbari Mahaananda barrage area.

According to local sources, the water current at the barrage was extremely strong, and a few fishermen present warned the students not to enter the water. However, it is alleged that the three friends ignored that warning and entered the water.

Then disaster struck suddenly. When one student began to drown in the strong current, one of his friends jumped into the water to save him. But within moments, he too was swept away by the current. Local fishermen managed to rescue the third student somehow.

Upon receiving the news of the incident, police from the Phansidewa police station arrived at the scene. Later, a civil defense team also joined the search for the two missing students. Despite extensive searches in the vast area of the Mahaananda barrage, no trace of them was found for a long time.

Meanwhile, upon hearing the news of her son's disappearance, the mother of the student from Malda was practically shattered. Speaking to the media, she said that her son had been studying in the Fulbari hostel for a long time. He had gone out with friends before with family permission and returned safely to the hostel. So this time too, he had gone out with permission.

On the other hand, the student from Mekhliganj who survived reported that one of the missing students was from Malda and the other was a resident of Bangladesh. As a result, the anxiety among their families has increased due to the disappearance of the two students.

For a moment of joy, entering the water of the Mahaananda, and then watching two friends drown before their eyes—this incident has cast a shadow of grief over the acquaintances of the students. A vigorous search is still ongoing for the two missing students at the Mahaananda barrage.
