Ukraine's drone attack on Siberian oil refinery 2,500 kilometers away, CIA chief claims Russian soldiers' lifespan in the field is '20-30 minutes'
On July 6, Ukraine launched a long-range drone attack on the Gazprom Neft oil refinery in Omsk, Siberia. According to the Ukrainian military, this attack, carried out at least 2,500 kilometers from the border, is one of their deepest strikes since the war began. Around the same time, CIA chief John Ratcliffe claimed at a conference in Pennsylvania that due to AI-powered drones, the average lifespan of Russian soldiers on the battlefield has dropped to just 20 to 30 minutes.
Reuters reported that the local Russian administration confirmed the attack on the oil refinery in Omsk on Monday, July 6. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces later also acknowledged responsibility for the attack.
Omsk region governor Vitaly Khotsenko stated that the drones reached the industrial area north of the city. However, he did not directly mention the name of the refinery. Khotsenko claimed that at the start of the day, air defense forces in Omsk shot down several drones. The Russian Ministry of Defense also claimed that they destroyed the drones.
The Kyiv Post, citing Reuters, reported that operations at the Omsk refinery ceased after the attack, according to two industrial sources. Both Ukraine and industrial sources claim that two primary distillation units (crude distillation units) at the refinery have become inoperable, which is equivalent to nearly three-quarters of total production. This damage assessment primarily comes from Ukraine and commercial sources, and Russia has not independently confirmed it.
Different sources have provided varying information regarding the distance of the attack. While the Ukrainian military and several media outlets reported the distance as 2,500 kilometers, some sources including the Kyiv Post have stated it to be up to 3,000 kilometers. The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SSO) claimed that the attack was carried out using advanced FP-1 long-range drones.
Ukraine has described the Omsk refinery as Russia's largest oil refinery. However, Russian media Astra reported that, according to industrial data, the refining capacity of Kirishi and Achinsk refineries may be higher than this. ⚠️
Meanwhile, at a defense and innovation conference held at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, CIA chief John Ratcliffe commented on Ukraine's drone capabilities. According to a Bloomberg report, he stated that their intelligence is consistent with open-source reports coming from Ukraine, and the average lifespan of a newly arrived Russian soldier on the battlefield is estimated to be around 20 to 30 minutes. Ratcliffe remarked that AI-powered drones have now become 'specialized, low-cost killing machines.'
Military Times reported that Ratcliffe further stated that proficiency in emerging technologies has become as important as military strength, and that is why, even after four and a half years, relatively weaker Ukraine has been able to hold back a powerful force like Russia.
In recent months, Ukraine has been carrying out a series of long-range drone attacks targeting Russian oil refineries. The aim of these operations is to exert pressure on Russian energy production and exports. The Ukrainian General Staff claims that these attacks have affected nearly 42 percent of Russia's total oil refining capacity.
According to media reports, several regions in Russia are experiencing an energy crisis, and fuel rationing has been implemented in many areas. Although Russian President Vladimir Putin recently acknowledged the energy shortage, he described it as temporary and 'not serious.'
